Cornelia F. Bradford School PS16 Newsletter

December 24th, 2020

Parents, Staff and Students,

"This is Mrs. Watkins-Williams wishing every one of you a safe, healthy and happy Holiday season. We all know how tumultuous 2020 has been - no need to rehash the thought. Quarantine gave us all plenty of time to reflect but let us look forward to a new season in 2021. A season of hope, wonder and new beginnings. Let 2021 give us time to project by setting goals and having expectations for a brighter future. On behalf of the administrators of PS16 have a wonderful, hopeful new beginning"

In September, many of our students began their educational journey and experienced their "First Day of School." Our little PreK students are also learning remotely, having never set foot in a classroom before. Despite this, our PreK teachers are making sure our 3 and 4 year old's are happy and learning. The PreK teachers have held meet and greets and visited student homes. They made sure they seen their students at Halloween. For the holidays, our PreK teachers went above and beyond to continue with their usual holiday traditions. Many of the students received a visit from their teachers bearing gifts. Other classes were able to meet at the Korean War Memorial and at Danforth PS16 Annex to exchange gifts.

To all of our teachers and staff at Danforth Avenue; we are beyond grateful for all that you do for our littlest students.

Our teachers have gotten very creative in finding ways for our children to still have fun and celebrate different events and holidays. This time of the year is usually one of huge excitement with the holiday concert, the tree and Menorah lighting, class parties and gift exchanges. For our younger students, the highlight of the entire year is Breakfast with Santa!

Santa Claus is not one to put a pause on traditions. While he was unable to pose for photos and have breakfast, he was adamant that he had to visit with the boys and girls of Cornelia F. Bradford. Santa Claus received special permission to join Zoom and as an extra surprise Mrs. Claus was able to join him. She is usually so very busy at the North Pole making sure all the Elves are working hard in Santa's workshop but Zoom enabled her to be in two places at the same time! We can't wait to meet Mrs. Claus in person when she visits PS16 with Santa next year!

Thank you Santa and Mrs. Claus for bringing so much joy to the boys and girls. Hopefully the children all remember that Mrs. Claus said to leave vegetables for Santa on Christmas Eve!

Each year at PS16, our Kindergarten rooms are transformed into candy stores as parents join their children to decorate a gingerbread house. This year was just as exciting for the boys and girls from Ms. Nicholas and Mrs. Tapia's room. With precise coordination they managed to get several of the PS16 Elves to help get packages to their students. Both parents and students joined their teachers to decorate their gingerbread house via Zoom. Thank you Room 103 for managing to uphold this long standing PS16 tradition.

When PS16 parent, Yndira Jones (mom to Aaliyah and Idris) came across a pair of gloves with a note explaining that they had been left for anyone who may need them, she was inspired to do the same thing. She reached out to her friends, fellow PS16 parents, Priya, Natasha, Vickie, Preethi, Erica, Deanna, Shaili, Shalinee, Jessica and Shaheen. Together they purchased hats, gloves, socks and hand warmers and distributed them to the needy in Jersey City. Their gesture will go a long way in spreading some warmth and cheer this holiday season. This initiative is happening in many places throughout the world. We hope that by sharing, our PS16 community will be encouraged to join in keeping Jersey City warm.

At the latest Student Council Meeting, some of the students said they tried to reach out to our principal via email using the jcpsnj address and didn't receive a response. Mrs. Watkins-Williams said, " I don't use that address. And certainly, I don't want students believing that their correspondence to me is being ignored. If students want to reach out to me, please have them contact me at twatkins-williams@jcboe.org and I will be sure to get back to them regarding their concerns."

We are delighted to announce that virtual learning will not deter our teachers from ensuring their students are able to participate in the PS16 Spelling Bee 2021. In place of our traditional spelling bee program, we will hold the competition through online spelling tests. The first step to spelling bee participation is for parents to register their child(ren) for the Scripps National Spelling Bee's online testing platform by visiting https://online-test.spellingbee.com
