Dear PS16 Families,

Last week Jersey City became the first city in the state to recognize childhood cancer awareness month by raising a flag above city hall. We are so proud of our very own PS16 student Jackson Germadnig for representing his peers at the flag raising ceremony. Jackson was recognized by the City for his bravery in fighting leukemia, and was awarded a beautiful medal! You are our hero, Jackson!

Dear parents and guardians,

Tonight 6:30 – 8pm is PS16’s Open House. There is no CASPER today, dismissal & pickup for all students is 2:45pm.

Beginning in the auditorium:

• Doors open at 6pm. From 6 to 6:30, the CPA will be selling raffle tickets ($1 each or $5 for 10 – please bring cash!) for gift cards from local businesses such as:
  • Rumi Turkish Grill
  • Downtown Yogurt
  • Word Bookstore
  • Helen’s Pizza
  • Bambino Chef
  • Choco Pain
  • and more
• At 6:30, Ms. Watkins will welcome everyone, followed by the CPA giving a brief presentation.
• From 7 – 8pm, parents/guardians will go to their child’s classroom for teacher informational sessions.

Citywide Parent Committee meeting, hosted by BOE Trustees Gina Verdibello and Joan Terrell-Paige will take place TONIGHT at 6PM, in the P.S.#16 Auditorium. Parents from all Jersey City Public Schools can attend.

Other important dates for the following weeks:

Tuesday, Sept. 17, 6:30-8PM – P.S.#16 Open House – Parents will hear a presentation by the Principal & the CPA Team, get updates regarding the AfterSchool Program registration, uniform deliveries and the upcoming Family Movie Night. Parents will also  have the opportunity to meet their class teachers, and receive information about joining class groups such as Remind, ClassDojo, What’sApp

UPDATED** Wednesday, Sept. 18, 6:30-8PM Danforth Ave Early Childhood Center/PS16 Annex Open House at 160 Danforth Ave. – hosted by Mr. Salgado and Danforth staff. Parents will have the opportunity to meet Parent Council/CPA Team members designated to assist with questions and concerns regarding Danforth Ave site.

Thank you to all our families who enrolled in Cornelia Bradford Camp, and to our wonderful PS16 Teachers and Staff who made it possible! The past four weeks have been an absolute blast! The kids worked on their summer reading, math games, science experiments, crochet club, took walks to the park, saw Toy Story 4 at the big cinema at Newport Mall and travelled to Coney Island Aquarium!

Special thanks to the JCPD officers of the East District for being our camp partners this summer, by escorting us to the movies, playing with us in the park and for throwing us an awesome ice cream party!

We will miss everyone so much and cannot wait to see you back in school in September!

We wish everyone happy end-of-school year and would like to remind you that Cornelia Bradford Camp will begin on Monday, June 24. Here are a few preliminary details to remember.

All registrants will receive an email with Waver/Disclosure forms that need to be submitted on the first day of camp. (If you are unable to view/print the forms at home, hard copies will be provided at school on Monday morning)

Camp hours are 8:30AM-5:30PM, Monday – Friday (June 24 – July 19, with the exception of July 4, when school is closed),  with the following schedule:

• Morning Learning:  8:30AM-12:30PM
• (lunch 11:45AM)
• Sports Camp:  12:30PM-2:30PM
• After Care:  2:30PM-5:30PM
• (snack served 2:45PM)

Kids can wear regular comfortable clothes and shoes, (students participating in Sports camp must wear sneakers and sunscreen for safety). Once camp t-shirts arrive, students can wear camp shirts as preferred uniform.

Pizza Mondays & Fridays! – Camp will provide Pizza each Monday and Friday of camp duration, we ask that you please pack lunch on all other days (Tues,Wed.,Thu), and a water bottle every day.

All children in After Care will be provided snack every day of camp.

As we congratulated our 5th Graders in making a move to Middle School, we had to bid farewell to one pf PS16 most loyal parent volunteers of 11 years. Mrs. Maria Tolentino had an opportunity to serve on 5 different PS16 parent council teams in various capacities, has formed a PTA non-profit at Academy 1 school, and is an absolutely invaluable person, hardworking, optimistic and generous – universally loved by fellow parents, students, teachers and staff. Maria, we will miss you more than we can express. Thank you for all that you have done for our children and their teachers throughout the years!

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

One of our initiatives during this past school year has been to “adopt a school”. As Cornelia Bradford, our school’s founder believed that we must all be our brothers’ and sisters’, so do we. You may remember that a few months ago we held “Wear Blue for Autism” tag day fundraiser and as a result were able to make a $1,000 to the local JCPS special needs school – “Regional Day”.

We are happy and proud to share with you the grateful feedback from the students and staff of Regional Day who have informed us that the donation will be used to equip their new Sensory Room. In addition to that, a group of PS16 students and staff visited Regional Day during their Field Day celebration in a first of what we hope will be many productive interactions, that can help our students and their grow and develop in the best possible way.

Thank you for being our partners in good works! None of this would be possible without your ongoing support!

Dear Parents,

As much as we would like to be able to focus on end of the school year festivities and events, the current situation with teacher layoffs has not been full resolved. PS16 still has 4 non-tenured active classroom teachers whose Reduction in Force letters have not been rescinded.

This goes in direct contradiction with the BOE President’s online statements that all teachers will receive their reversal letters by week of June 10th, as well as the Mayor and the Superintendent’s statement that the final layoffs “would impact only a small subset of the initially notified employees who are not part of the core instructional classroom staff.”

As the week of June 10th concluded and we did not receive a confirmation that ALL our teachers will remain in their jobs next year, we sent a letter to the school district administration and all the members of the JCBOE insisting on immediate action and fulfillment of the above mentioned promises.  (Letter – PS16 Needs All RIF reversed ASAP)

At this time we have not received any response to our letter. We ask our parents to join us in the email campaign to the individuals listed in the attached letter, and to join us in attending the next BOE meeting, which according to jcboe.org will take place on June 20, 6PM at PS#26, 164 Laidlaw Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07306
