Cornelia F. Bradford School PS16 Newsletter

November 3, 2020

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On Election Day, we thank our custodians and security staff who made sure our school was ready and able to be used as a Polling Station. We thank you for welcoming voters, eager to make their voices heard, to our school. No matter the outcome of this election, remember that we, the people, are the ones who choose to be decent, loving, caring and compassionate human beings. Our kindness and behavior towards others is what makes our world a better place.

Our Superintendent, Mr. Franklin Walker, announced via robocall that the Board of Education had voted for all Jersey City Public Schools to remain in Phase 1 of the reopening plan through the second marking period. The anticipated move to Phase 2, and partial return to the school building, is now February 2nd 2021. While this may be disappointing news, the safety of our staff, students and families is our number one priority.

This past week was one of great excitement and enjoyment for our students. The 'Trunk or Treat' was a roaring success and brought a bit of normality and lots of laughter. On Friday, many of our classes held virtual Halloween parties with fun games and costumes. We may not be able to return to our school building for a little bit longer, but our teachers and staff remain 100% committed to their students. #PS16STRONG

Flat Stanley is a popular student at PS16. So popular that there are many Flat Stanley's living their best lives in our community. The students of first grade continue to take their Flat Stanley's on adventures and share with their fellow classmates.

Ms. Mulcahy's First grade class have been hard at work on their space projects. They have been learning about the planets and the solar system, not just from books and videos, but from actually looking at the planets too!

Congratulations to all our students who entered the Second Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest! All of the pumpkins showed fantastic creativity. Much appreciation is owed to Mrs. Hennessey and Ms. Gordon for undertaking the difficult task of judging the pumpkins. The winning pumpkins will be receiving their prizes this week.

Halloween is usually a busy time at PS16. It is a time of great excitement as our 3rd graders get to celebrate their first school dance at PS16. Our students are barely recognizable in their costumes as they parade on Grand Street. And the laughter echoes around the hallways as each classroom celebrates Halloween with pizza and games. This year, our teachers were determined that the students would not miss out. In true PS16 style, they adapted and made Halloween fun for our children. 'Trunk or Treat' took many weeks of planning and organizing. Much appreciation is owed to the committee comprising of Mrs. Hennessey, Mrs. Talalai, Nurse Brennan, Ms. Warrington and Ms. Damato. Thank you to all the teachers and staff who participated, decorated their trunks and ensured there was more than enough candy! Our students and their parents had a great time!

A huge amount of gratitude is owed to everyone who donated to our community food drive. The response was overwhelming. Mrs. Watkins-Williams shared; "I would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to the parents who donated to the Food Drive to feed families in the community. We were able to donate 25 boxes of dry goods to families in need at PS#22. Again, thank you for your support."

My name is Leanne Kerr. For the most part I'm known as Cora's mom, Micheal's Mom or Aisling's mom! Most recently, I was Grandma Wolf and I apologize to the children I frightened!! This is my second year as an official CPA team member and 8th year as a PS16 parent! I love being a part of the PS16 community. I really enjoy helping my teachers as Class Parent and I especially love playing Bingo with the student's at the Holiday Parties. My favorite role is my involvement with the school play as Costume Director. While it is an insane amount of work, seeing 'my play kids' come alive on stage brings so much pride. Volunteering at your child's school is one of the most rewarding experiences, whether it is chaperoning a field trip, reading a story or making costumes. What makes our school so special, besides our amazing staff and students, are the many active parents (and grandparents!) we are lucky to have!
