Cornelia F. Bradford School PS16 Newsletter

October 11, 2020

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Currently, JCPS are preparing to bring students for in-person instruction, using phase 1 of the hybrid reopening plan, on November 17th. Our administrators have distributed the reopening survey. Please complete and return to your child's teacher by Tuesday October 13th.

This past week our teachers have continued to show that they are committed to optimizing the leaning experience for our children. They work long after the school day has officially finished, answering emails and developing and grading assignments. We thank them for their ongoing dedication to our children. At this time, our school is reintroducing the 'On Call Teacher' program that successfully ran over the summer, as an added support to our classroom teachers.

Each year, our school community comes together to help organize and distribute food hampers to those in need. This year is one like no other and there is more of a need than in previous years. Continuing this week, there will be a box placed outside our school each morning between 9am and 11am. Please consider donating dry food items like rice, pasta, canned goods, and non-perishables.

Food Hampers will be distributed on October 23rd. We will send out more information in coming newsletters. We understand the financial situation of many in our community has changed and some may want privacy about their situation. If your family or someone you know in our neighborhood would benefit from receiving a food hamper and does not want to come pick one up at the October 23rd distribution, please complete this form. We will make arrangements with you for a pick up that works for you.

As always, we depend on the generosity of our parents and we thank you in advance for all your donations.

Schools will be closed on Monday October 12th in recognition of Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. The calendar for the 2020-21 school year can be found here.

National Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15 and continues through October 15. This year's theme is, Hispanics: Be Proud of Your Past, Embrace the Future. At PS16, students are strongly encouraged to be proud of who they are and where they came from. Our diverse population is what makes us so special.

This week many of our classrooms celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. Our fifth graders gave wonderful presentations on influential Hispanics. Tomas Herrera (Room 303 Vice President) got into character as Colombian novelist, screenwriter and journalist, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Emiliano Padierna (Room 303) paid homage to his namesake, and one of Mexico's greatest revolutionaries, Emiliano Zapata. In what is a first for our newsletter, we proudly share the writings of our student Emiliano!

Ms. Mulcahy's first graders were also treated to a special performance to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Student, Lisa Kaskoff, alongside her mom, Natalia, gave a presentation all about Flamenco dancing and the class enjoyed a Flamenco dance performance.

Taking the plunge to become a CPA board member usually comes after spending time volunteering for other school activities. Just like chaperoning a class of kindergarteners to Jenkinson's Aquarium, it isn't always easy but it is rewarding. Over the next few issues of our newsletter we will continue to introduce the executive board of the CPA. You will read about the numerous ways parents are able to contribute to PS16. You may even be encouraged!

Shaili Marwaha serves as our Interim Assistant Treasurer. Shaili's son, Sheel Chauhan, joined PS16 in Kindergarten, and is now in 4th Grade.

"During the last 4 years it has been my privilege to be involved in various CPA activities, including festival events presentations, organizing class holiday events, piano recitals, mystery book readings, assisting in book fairs and in career presentations. I have also enjoyed the role of being a chaperone in several field trips organized by the school. This voluntary role has enriched me as a person, and I believe that, in turn the children too have benefitted. I look forward to being an active member of the CPA team, and contribute in continuously enriching the environment for our children."
