Preparations are well underway to celebrate Halloween at PS16. Random scarecrows and spooky pumpkins are gathering in our hallways! Our class parents are currently preparing to participate in a Trunk or Treat event for our students. They are also coordinating pizza parties with their teachers. These events would not be able to happen without your contributions for which we are beyond appreciative.

Second Grader Aaliya Vakharkar (Room 103) writes "Long ago, goddess fought with evil power and defeated evils after nine long nights war. Today to respect that victory we celebrate Navratri. NAV means nine and RATRI means nights. We wear colorful Indian clothes "chaniya choli" and do traditional dance called Garba for nine nights. I love Navratri because it is musical, colorful and full of energetic dance - Garba."

Dussehra is an important Hindu festival signifying the good over evil. It is celebrated on the final day of Navratri. The annual festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the world. Fifth grade students Kaira and Kabir Shah, explain; "Dusshera also known as Dashahara. ‘Dasha’ means 10 and ‘Hara’ means 'defeated'. It is the defeat of the negative qualities within us which are represented by the ten headed Demon King Ravana. Prince Rama killed Ravana. The message of this celebration is that good always wins over evil."

Due to the pandemic the USDA has extended the use of the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) which will allow all students to eat for free during the 2021-2022 school year. Later, when we get a la carte items for purchase, 'My School Bucks' will be used for students to keep money on their accounts. We encourage all parents to complete the Lunch Application as it helps our district receive much needed federal funding.
The breakfast and lunch menu for October can be found here.

The district calendar for the school year can be found here. School will be closed from Monday November 1st through Friday November 5th.

At this time both gates to Paulus Hook Park remain unlocked during the school day. Our staff are being extremely vigilant while overseeing outdoor recess. However we also need parent cooperation during drop off and dismissal times. Please close the Grand Street gate when you enter and exit. We ask that you allow our teachers to safely assemble our children at dismissal and refrain from permitting younger siblings to use the equipment until our security guard (assisted by CPA volunteers) opens the Washington Street gate at 2:45pm. Our students safety is always our number one priority. We must work together to ensure this.
Please also note that a Jersey City ordinance (Ord. No. 16-167) prohibits ALL dogs, whether leashed or unleashed, from Paulus Hook Park.
