Cornelia F. Bradford School PS16 Newsletter

September 4th, 2020

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Usually, at this time, we are all busy shopping for school supplies and uniforms. This year we are finding ourselves with no great urgency to rush to Target or Staples, but rest assured the teachers and staff of PS16 are busy preparing to welcome their students. PS16 remains committed to ensuring each child continues to grow and learn despite the challenging circumstances this school year brings. If you are new to the PS16 community we extend a huge WELCOME!

As of now, ALL Jersey City Public Schools will begin the school year virtually on Thursday, September 10th, and will continue with virtual learning for at least the first marking period. https://www.nj.com/hudson/2020/09/jersey-city-superintendent-nixes-in-person-learning-until-at-least-november.html The Board of Education and Superintendent, Mr. Walker, will make the final decision as to when we move onto Phase 2. The re-opening plan detailing each phase can be found by clicking here. We strongly encourage all parents to familiarize themselves with the district plan.

Understandably, we are all eager and anxious to know how this school year is going to look for our children. Our administrators and teachers are currently working on schedules for remote learning. They have been taking professional development courses over the summer to strengthen their technical skills and provide for a rich and nurturing learning experience. Until the schedules are finalized and approved we ask you to discuss safe online behavior and encourage your child to practice logging onto Google Classroom and Zoom so they are more confident and prepared for virtual school.

Our teachers return on Tuesday, September 8th. We ask for your continued patience as they begin to reach out to their students and their parents. Our teachers are excited and eager to meet everyone.

Grade level school supply lists can be found here. These lists were updated by our teachers in July. Given that the school year is beginning remotely your child may not need all the supplies at this time. Basic supplies like notebooks and pencils would be helpful.

If your child (Grades K to 5) is in need of a Chromebook, to fully participate in remote learning, please reach out to Ms.Chasidy, our school clerk, by emailing CCastellanos@jcboe.org. Please be aware Chromebooks are in limited supply throughout the district and priority will be given to those students with the greatest need.

The CPA has temporarily suspended the sale of school uniform shirts and gym attire. Students are not required to wear a uniform for their online classes. However, children should be dressed appropriately, pajamas will not be permitted.

Textbooks for Math and World Language will be distributed at school. Please adhere to the following schedule:

Kindergarten - Tuesday September 8th 12pm - 1pm

1st Grade - Tuesday September 8th 2pm - 3pm

2nd Grade - Wednesday September 9th 9am - 10am

3rd Grade - Wednesday September 9th 11am - 12pm

4th Grade - Wednesday September 9th 1pm - 2pm

5th Grade - Wednesday September 9th 2:30 - 3pm

Social distancing guidelines will be strictly enforced and masks must be worn.

All course material required is available on the district website at www.jcboe.org

Construction continues at the site of the eagerly awaited PS16 Annex. The Mayor's Office believes we are still on track for opening the new classrooms in September 2021. The new Annex will help alleviate the overcrowding issues we have at PS16.

As we continue to operate our schools virtually it is extremely important that each student's contact information is correct. If you have recently moved, changed your phone number or email address this is a reminder to update your contact information as soon as possible with our school clerk, Noemi Rivera, nrivera4@jcboe.org.

The CPA team is made up of parents from our school. As children move on from PS16 several leadership positions on our team will need to be filled. We hope you would consider volunteering to help fill some of these vacancies. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please email ps16cpa@gmail.com
